Futuretrack

Futuretrack is a census of applicants to full-time UK higher education courses applying through UCAS in 2006. It is a five-year longitudinal programme funded by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU) and conducted by a team of researchers at the Warwick Institute for Employment Research, led by Professor Kate Purcell.

The programme involves the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. Surveys and related investigative work are being conducted at four points:

  • in summer 2006 prior to higher education entry;
  • in summer 2007 one year on;
  • in autumn 2009 when most will have completed their undergraduate programme of study, and
  • in winter 2011/12, when most will have entered the labour market or gone on to further study.

Just under 130,000 responses were received for the first stage of the survey. Females (63% of total respondents) and those with higher UCAS tariff points were more likely to respond; the survey data were weighted to take account of these biases.

A longitudinal pilot of a sample of 2005 applicants is being conducted one year ahead at each stage to inform the methodology of the main study.
