PDF files for digital magazines

Please provide each advert as a single PDF file with the following settings:

  • Embedded fonts (not subset, please avoid CID Type H encoded fonts). This allows the text to be picked up by the internal search facility and also makes it accessible and printable.
  • High resolution PDF, minimum of 300 pixels per inch, for print CMYK.
  • Cropped to exact art size (no need for crop marks/bleed etc, as we are not a traditional print process).

Flash files

Please note, if you do not intend to use animation or interactivity on your advert, you only need to supply a PDF file at the specifications outlined above.

  • Flash files are presented on a layer above your supplied PDF. It is vital that you place a non-transparent background as the lowest layer in your flash movie (e.g a filled rectangle the same dimensions as the flash movie). Changing the background colour property alone will not make the movie non-transparent, and will result in the PDF showing through the Flash movie.
  • Please flatten all non-system fonts within the Flash movie to vector shapes.
  • Please supply Flash 9 files.
  • Both the .swf and .fla files must be supplied.
  • Set the Flash file to a frame rate of 24 fps.
  • Follow the recommended file size limits where possible to ensure efficient loading. If you exceed the suggested file size limit, include a pre-loader to keep the user informed of loading progress.
  • Avoid any ActionScript that can affect the NXTbook engine, such as the _parent layer of the animation, _level0 and _root references, or global functions like setTimeinterval.
  • By default, all Flash movies will loop continuously. For Flash movies that shouldn't loop, please include a stop() action on the final frame of the movie.
  • Only one self-contained .swf file per advert is allowed.
  • Your Flash movie should not contain any links. Links should be included on the PDF and will be picked up from there.
  • We do not support animations created using SWiSH.
  • Make sure there is no white space around the edge of the Flash animation.
  • Animations need to be created for display at the maximum zoom size of 950 pixels wide.
  • Filenames for the .swf should not include special characters such as brackets, question marks, quotes, commas, etc. Underscore characters are ok to use.

Video files

Please provide video files in Quicktime format. For best results, use resolutions between 320 x 240 to 640 x 480. By default, we will convert these files to FLV format, with no play controls (auto-play when you turn to that page). FLV files are hosted by NXTbook. Therefore, we will need to update your Flash movie to include a reference to the video. Please refer to the note above about flattening text into vector shapes, which should prevent the need to re-supply your Flash movie.

General advice for this medium

  • Remember that your advert will be viewed on screen rather than on paper. Less text is better.
  • Large text is better for your important points – details can be zoomed in on.
  • Don't forget to include your URL and/or email address. Make sure your website address stands out if that is what you want to direct people to.
  • If using a video within your Flash Movie, make sure any important information either remains visible, or is represented elsewhere in your advert. This will ensure that any important information is easily obtainable by all users.
